The Ending Is Comforting is a novel about friendship, creativity, and the value of (false) hope.
It’s the summer of 2130, somewhere in northern Italy. Esther, a painter, and Thea, an engineer, are living two of the best lives that are still possible in this era. “Spes I” is a special place for special people; only the operating organization knows that the villages are based on a questionable concept.
Calm and quietly content, the inhabitants of Spes I pursue their passions, meet other residents on balmy evenings, and enjoy light drinks. The atmosphere in the village is maintained by a dome and a ventilation system on the one hand, and by coaching and mindfulness on the other. Esther is happy to live and work here, isolated from the horrors of the outside world. Her paintings, always featuring two suns, are among the most coveted works of art of her time.
But when the creative couple Cleo and Thomas arrive from Berlin, incidents begin to occur and the atmosphere changes. Soon, Esther finds herself waking up in the back seat of a car, far from the confines of the village. She is in the outside world, on a mission with an uncertain outcome.
