The third case in the French Riviera detective series featuring Commissaire Léon Duval takes the investigator to the Île Sainte-Marguerite. Directly off the shore of Cannes, the island is a popular local recreation area; in summer, ferries shuttle incessantly back and forth between the city and small island harbor.
But fall has arrived now, and a storm front has gathered over the bay when a sailor is found, murdered, in the port of Sainte-Marguerite. Duval and his team of investigators set to work. But the ferry service is discontinued soon, and Duval continues his on-site investigations alone. He’s rented the forester’s lodge, and, fortunately, the island restaurant has an excellent chef. But it’s not just the weather that’s stormy; the homicide case is also proving to be turbulent, with a second corpse turning up shortly after Duval’s arrival on the island. And, privately, too, the Commissaire isn’t necessarily navigating calm waters…
“Commissaire Duval could become a French Commissario Brunetti: he appreciates good food, has the right moral compass, enjoys taking on authority.” Christian Beisenherz, WDR 2 Krimi-Tipp
