My Life is so Terribly Long
From 2009 to 2010, this great German publicist and writer subjected both himself and contemporary events to the scrutiny of his critical and clearly focused gaze: ranging from the deployment of troops in Afghanistan, popular uprisings in Tehran, a tribute to the Nobel laureate and author Herta Müller to insights into his own modus operandi. His thoughts and reflections demonstrate just how firmly this man has his finger on the pulse of the major developments and issues of our age. At the same time, they cast a light onto his private sphere, whilst avoiding any suggestion of voyeurism, or concealing the author’s natural sense of humour.
What keeps this indefatigable 87-year-old fit and young is the fervent desire to defend our socio-economic system, following the bitter experiences of his youth under Hitler’s Germany. Whenever he deems the democratic republic under a parliamentary constitution under attack – be it from the right, the left or radical Muslims – this uncompromising and incorruptible eyewitness is prepared to stand up and be counted. Supported by critical Muslims, Giordano has been engaging in heated debate with the so-called German “multicultural illusionists” and integration-shy Muslims. The fact that his views may jeopardise his personal safety is a consequence he is prepared to accept.
“I cannot live without writing”, confided Ralph Giordano to his diary, but neither can he live without raising his voice when he sees injustice. Over the period of one year, Giordano kept a diary of what preoccupied, stirred and moved him – brilliantly written, with striking clarity.
