The Dark Silence

German Crime Fiction Award 2006

This is Georg Dengler´s second case. After having solved the political murder from Die blaue Liste, the hard drinking, disbelieving hero from Stuttgart is now drawn into a case that takes him back to the 1940s.
Robert Sternberg asks Dengler to investigate in a heritage matter. In his late mother´s files, he found a contract from 1947. Therein his grandfather transfers the old castle to the Roth family without any identifiable service in return. Sternberg aims to cancel this contract. The notary who certified the contract is still alive and when questioned, advises Dengler not to further investigate, telling him it would not be wise to reveal everything.
Dengler however is not easily intimidated – he questions several possible witnesses in the village. At some point he is always stopped by a dark wall of silence though. Still he continues and step by step reveals an inconceivable crime committed during the last days of the War.
When he is close to discovering the truth, unknown persons start to chase him.

Like his first novel Die blaue Liste, which was highly and positively recognized by the press, Denglers second case is based on an actual occurence. Schorlau composed an exciting crime novel that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat.
