The Labyrinth of Life

Virtually no other writer of post-war German literature has produced such a broad body of work as Dieter Wellershoff. His novels, short stories and essays relate to each other in many different ways. To mark his 90th birthday, some of his most important stories are brought together in this compilation.

As in his novels, in his short stories Wellershoff proves he is a master of understanding emotions and challenging conventions and certainties. He describes situations in which the individual becomes a problem to himself and he focuses on the search for a meaning in encounters and confrontations with others and on the struggle to understand life.

In brief tales, long stories and novellas, he describes what makes people who they are: the longing for love, the desire for recognition and control, the power of envy and jealousy, the fear of failure and, again and again, the desire to communicate with others.
