Absolution

World Premiere in Vienna in 1994

It is said that Ludwig Weisheim has committed suicide. His parents are waiting for the transfer of the body, the funeral is planned for the next day. But something about this suicide does not seem right, and during the long wait it becomes clear that all family members are somehow implicated in the circumstances of this death. But it also remains unclear whether this death and the funeral are not maybe only staged in order to make the father – who is running for a political position – talk about the past which has silently destroyed the family years ago. Or in order to make him reveal his connections to rightwing circles.

Absolution shows this family’s tragicomic attempts – in the face of confrontation with the lies in their lives – to invent ever new versions of their own history, in order to be able to live with the past.
